So I have decided to move on to the word snap for the time being seeing as Extend was infuriating me. These are a few examples that I have come up with.

Glow
Just trying different effects...
Looks a bit tacky to me, but maybe put into the animation it might look better... but it probably has to do with the garish green colour, on a black background, with that typeface...

Things that SNAP
Ideas for the snap animation...
Thinking about it... anything can snap (Fred+pencils for example)

Rulers

The glow stick could make a really interesting animation, making the word snap in half... and then glowing. There are many opportunities to use colour to add effect in there too.
Rulers and pencils, clean break? rough break? bits coming off in the snap...?
The pen could also have some brilliant effects, maybe making the word bleed out ink once it has snapped.
I will try all these out. Probably using illustrator to actually make the letterforms themselves snap in half.

After Effects - Lynda.com
So, following a lot of difficulties getting my head around the programme, I asked a family friend who is a graphic designer in London for help. To which he answered that I should buy a subscription to lynda.com.
He said it was a website full of tutorials and courses that would help me, and that everyone in his studio and that he knows uses it regularly.
Brilliant.

Experiments/ideas
So I'm finding all of this pretty tricky. I keep getting lead astray by doing experiments in after effects that have nothing to do with my brief.
I am now thinking of ways of making this brief original. The idea of just using the words given and playing with them (I know is the point of the brief) but I want to add more.
Maybe make each animation follow the next... like a sequence?
Use different words to add to this idea, such as These Words Can Move.... or something like that?
For the first time, the ideas and design are not my problem, it is so frustrating knowing a programme can do what you want... you just don't know how to make it do it.
So for the moment I am just playing around.

Type ideas for Silent Movie - Storyboard induction.
So for the storyboard session with Fred we were asked to come up with type ideas to start off our storyboarding.
I decided to use both typefaces that came with photoshop... and I also looked into different ones downloaded from the internet.
SNAP -
For this I wanted to start off looking at fonts that I could actually break up. Breaking up both the word and the letters themselves to start off looking at simple ways of visually communicating the word. I want to try out different types of lettering, to really get into perspective what I want to do... so, both serif and sans.
I like the idea of playing around with type that is already broken up... such as the stencil std example. I will find some more similar versions.
EXTEND -
I feel that this would work a lot better with a clean, crisp typeface to really get the extension of the letters, both horizontally across the frame... and vertically, actually manipulating the letterforms, also playing around with extending serifs.
ZOOM -
There is so much more scope with zoom... you could combine anything, as it does not depend on the spacing of the letters so much. I could focus on the whole word at once as well as each individual letter.
I am going to have fun with this one.
