OUGD202 self-evaluation

This module has by far been the most challenging to get my head around than any previous one. I think it is probably the fact that I have got so used to producing static designs that this has been a real learning curve. It took a long time to realize that on top of what I am used to… I have a whole new programme to learn and an entire new range of processes to go through before my product is complete. This lead to time management issues as I really didn’t consider the amount of time it actually takes to animate, render and upload.
At first, I was incredibly excited about this module and the amount we were going to learn in the process… this soon turned to frustration. I had so many ideas, but when it came to the software, it seemed there was a barrage in my head. It just didn’t seem to want to do what I asked (which is another way of saying that I was clearly wasn’t asking it in the right way). I took hours watching tutorials over Christmas but the information never seemed to go in.  However, when I got back into the design swing upon returning in January, things started to click, especially with Mike’s help and the really well thought out inductions we were given. I started to enjoy it more.
Looking back, the decision of doing dogs as my Top ten subject was a rash one. I didn’t want to produce anything I had done before (both twitter and hi-tops came up in my  train of thought). I now regret doing dogs just because of the difficulty in trying to get dogs to behave like dogs with the basic training that we have been given. Although looking at my idents, I am rather proud of what I have achieved.
Again, this module, like all others before it, brought time management issues with me. I kept going off on different tangents of ideas… probably went through about 5 different final ideas before I settled on using vectorised dogs. I tried out hand-drawn… which in hindsight was silly as I am not so good at drawing, I just liked what I drew in my head I think.
Along with teaching me a lot about AfterEffects, my illustrator skills greatly improved during this module as my entire animation was based on it. Working out the layers and how they would move was probably one of my favourite parts of the design process… and the most frustrating when one minor glitch lead to hours of unpicking both illustrator files and keyframes.
The part of my final pieces that I am most proud of are my idents, probably because they took a lot more thought (I don’t know why I prioritised them over the title sequence) and they seemed to take a lot more time to produce than the final product.
I, once again, did not leave myself enough time to really do myself proud and I am frustrated that, once again, things happened in my life outside college that took my thoughts away from the project as I feel I could actually have produced a really brilliant piece of work. However, what I have produced still astounded me. If you had told me 3 months ago that I would have been able to do this now, I would not have believed it. It has definitely been a learning curve.

Ident number 3

For this ident I decided on using the small dachsund from the original 'woman and dog' animation that I had created as an initial experiment for testing the movement of the characters.
I found that this one worked a lot better without the woman attached.
The legs move very quickly on a rotation which makes the dog look like it is bobbing along very quickly... much like a sausage dog does.
I have also incorporated the channel 5 logo to appear a lot throughout. I think this is my favourite ident.

Ident number 2

This one is focusing on a far more animated dog with more complex layers which I can animate.
This is my first attempt. This took a lot more time than I thought it would.

This shows all the things I can animate.

WHY HAVE I MADE IT SO HARD FOR MYSELF?

Ident number 1

This is the first part of the ident.
Animation needs to be changed on the arm of the woman.

This has more work to be done with the small bits of animation but it is the general idea of what I want it to look like.

Packaging

I have decided to do simple but appropriate packaging, mainly for time reasons.
I have designed a simple net and used assets and typefaces used in my animation to put it into context.

This is the net.

This is the design...

The inside of the net is just repetitive images, almost like wall paper of the woman and her sausage dog. And for the front, incorporating the Channel 5 logo...

Dog for ident

This is the dog i have chosen to animate for my first ident...

Colour coded layers...

Idents - Channel identification

I have decided to make my Top Ten Dog Breeds programme a Channel 5 Production... as they have a lot of these kind of programmes.
Also... the logo is perfect for my dog chasing a ball idea for the idents...

Sausage dog improvements

On re-doing the sausage dog animation, I decided to re-do the legs in a different way, so that they are kind of rotating on a pivot which I think makes it look a lot more realistic.

I also played around with the owner... changing the anchor points for the legs and the arm... making it look less silly.

Animating the second woman and her dog

This one got very confusing what with the 14 layers... This is how I organised them to work with.

Video to come... when vimeo decides to behave.

As everything got deleted...

I am re-animating all my characters... which appears to be quite a good thing as I am spotting flaws in what I have previously done.
This is playing around with animating the woman and her sausage dog...

It looks simple but the positioning took a lot longer than previously expected...

Different variations of tilted head dog.

I wanted to try out different colours for this one...

These are a few variations, I am trying to re-evaluate my colour scheme to fit the theme slightly better.

So my computer crashes...

mid-render and deletes all the associated files. BRILLIANT.

Title sequence

After choosing my song for the final sequence, everything kind of fell into place and I knew what I needed to do... after a week or so of being frustrated and lost on this, it was a break-through. A bit too late however. Again, I am terrible at time management so I've found myself having to rush something that I wanted to spend more time on.

The type is pre-decided from my initial research into type and my look into an appropriate typeface for the target audience.

I also decided to use my idea to incorporate different dog breeds and kind of make it look like a competition programme with the "will yours make the cut" slogan.
For this I layered up 37 different dog breeds in the appropriate typeface in 2 different illustrator files so that I could play around with the timings better.
This is what the documents looked like.

It all got rather confusing.

The hard part was making the names come up on screen at the right time with the words of the song...

It is then a matter of incorporating the animated characters from my idents to go in time with the song and to back up the names of the dogs.

Another dog

This is a simpler image, very quick to do.
I am trying to capture simple dog movements, and this one is simply the confused 'tilt of head' look they give you when you do something to catch their eye.
This is the image on illustrator.

This is the simple animation process on After Effects.

And this is the rendered animation.

I am going to try out different speeds.

Another woman and her dog

Again, a woman walking a dog... many layers, lots of animation possibilities.

Character devlopment

These are some more images of some dogs that I am putting together in Illustrator to animate. In this one I have added far more layers so that I can animate it in a much more realistic way.
I am taking my time doing the dog characters at the moment as I think these are the most important to get right. I want to do as many as I can in the time I have so that I have a real range to play around with for the final animation.
I am working in silhouettes, as, I think that they have far more room for animation without it looking too unrealistic.
This is a dog that I have separated into ears, leg joints... neck.
Animation to follow...

Song Choice

After trailing the internet for songs about dogs that would fit the idea for the title sequence, I settled on Cat Stevens 'I love my dog'.

These are the lyrics.

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

All he asks from me is the food to give him strength
All he ever needs is love and that he knows he'll get

So, I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

All the pay I need comes shining through his eyes
I don't need no cold water to make me realize that

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana...

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana...

I love my dog, Baby, I love my dog. Na, na, na...
I love my dog, Baby, I love my dog. Na, na, na..

Both the lyrics and the tempo of the song are perfect for my idea for the title sequence.

I now need to get the type in time with the beats/words of the song to make it look appropriate.
