I wanted to produce a special edition vinyl for the EP that I am separating into 6 parts. Essentially a special edition that will bring my 6 ranges of merchandise together.
This design had to be different to the set that I designed for the Now, Voyager single.
I wanted it to be clear, fresh and minimalist.
My initial idea was to build on the collage design that I started to create earlier on in the brief.
However when I started to picture the vinyl, this seemed too cluttered and did not have the right tone to reflect that of the EP.
This is when I started to experiment with using the skeleton that I had previously put together.
Initially I was going to create a more intricate net that I got from the one I bought in the shop, but now that it has come to it, I do not have the time. But if I do have the time at the end of all this, I will create a mock-up in that format.
For the moment I drew up a simple sleeve net.
I then started to experiment with the image.
I then removed the 'what?' from the shard as I think it retracts from the image.
I then started to add imagery to see if it required it.
This looked too cluttered... and pointless. It added no message.
Again... collage... know when to stop.
One step further with this.
I also started to incorporate some of the type that I had created. It is the one that I tried to use with the single cover but chose against.
I also thought that it needed adapting for this design. The 3D of the type did not go well with the 2D image.
I removed the 3D outlines and decided it looked a lot better.
I then decided to incorporate the name of the EP. 'Now, Voyager'. I tried to use Futura but it didn't work at all.
I then started to look at more sophisticated serif type as I want it to have more serious connotations.
Livia Medium
Bitstream Vera
Romanserif
I decided to use 'Livia Medium' - it is thin and sophisticated. Does not retract from the image or the illustrated type. Just compliments it.
The track listings are also written in this typeface. Quite small on the back. The negative space on the cover has a strong impact, really drawing the audience to the image and type on the front.
The full net to print on thursday.
I want to foil the serif font, to make it a little more sophisticated, adding depth to the design. We shall see if I have the time, if not, I will propose it.
