Collection 100 - Research

As I continue to research deeper into hi-top shoes, both the facts and opinions lead to the conclusion that NIKE own most of the popular market for their sales at this time. Over 50% of all pairs are made by, or a company owned by NIKE. To back this up... as I took photographs of people wearing the trainers in the street, a large majority of the ones I found were NIKE 'Dunks'... and I didn't see the same pair twice.
On the other hand, completely contradicting my findings, a lot of the opinions from the survey I did on the shoes were that they were unoriginal and all looked the same. I find this quite interesting with the NIKE 'I.D' option... create a pair of shoes, completely to your choice... texture, colour, shape.

I have researched all areas of the main brands who produce the shoes... the history of the companies, their best sellers, their advertising campaigns, and their main target audiences. Then refining my research to the obvious one company... NIKE.
Why did they become so popular?
When did they go from a simple basketball shoe to a fashion statement?
And why?
Celebrities are more and more frequently being photographed wearing them, could this be adding to the growing demand?
Why don't more people use the NIKE 'I.D' option?
And are they really as "unoriginal" as some people think?
